Evaluation question 2

Noel Clarke is a famous television and film actor and has taken part in a lot of thrillers such as Centurion, I'll sleep when I'm dead and 4.3.2.1.
In our main actor you can see a lot of the same characteristics as on Noel Clarke, mostly on the clothes as the are both wearing hoodies, headphones and they have the same facial expression. This is a very common outfit for actors in thriller films. Some people may look at this outfit as a 'gangster oustfit' and other may categorize this as a casual/normal outfit that blends in with the crowd, my personal opinion is that this is a very casual outfit.

evaluation question 1

The first shot is our film company's logo to advertise and it is important for the audience to know which film company makes the film as all film companies specialize in a particular area.

The second shot is from the beginning of the film when the main character enters the area where the film takes place through a gate which I think it is an important picture as this establishing shot starts of the film.

The third shot is a picture of one of our production companies to show the audience which type of film it is and to show them that it is a British film as coffee films is a British film company.

The fourth shot is one of my favorite shots as it could show most of the story line of the film, it is dark in the area the main character is on but he is walking towards the light, this can symbolize that he is a bad guy now but he is headed towards something good, and he may need to make bad things happen for something good to follow.

The fifth shot is a picture of the main character sprinting between two buildings, it shows the audience that our film has a lot of action and may attract a lot of audience.

In my opinion the sixth shot is of the most important scene in our film, it shows the stunt that our main character performed himself to escape from one of the people chasing him, he jumped down from quite high which will attract a lot of viewers as most people like to see stunts and action scenes like this.

In the seventh shot you can see our main character hiding in the dark area at left side of the shot as he is trying to get away from the 'bad guys' but you can also see that he is in the dark which can symbolize the opposite.

The eighth shot is of one of the main scenes as it is when the main character finds some very confidential information which a big part of the film will be about, we do not let the audience see what is in it to wake curiosity so they will want to see the film.

The ninth shot is where the audience gets to know the mysterious main character, it is a shot of a very fancy watch and shows that he has good style and that he is not there to steal money or anything valuable as the watch symbolizes that he has enough money.

Genre research

I have chosen a thriller as my theme for the first 2 minutes of my movie for my media studies course work and here is research for the genre I.e Thriller.

What is a thriller?

Thrillers are a genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as the main elements.A common subgenre is psychological thrillers

Similarities between Thriller Movies!

Most or all thriller movies involve high amount of action and to some extent lot of blood, action and killing, a good example being James Bond. They normally have a good guy who is the hero who can do amazing stunts and has all the fancy gadgets and is very gentleman like who is normally which is not in al but most cases a special agent of some kind or does secretive work. The movies involve lots of women which adds to the effect of the movie and there is always a girl in the heroes life who is portrayed as a very ‘hot & sexy’ person.!

FAST FIVE

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead a reunion of returning all-stars from every chapter of the explosive franchise built on speed in Fast Five. In this installment, former cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. Dwayne Johnson joins returning favorites Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for this ultimate high-stakes race. It is an action packed movie with every corner filled with exciting scenes which will blow you away and is considered as one of the best thrillers of the year!

HANNA!

Raised by her father (Eric Bana of Star Trek), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Finland, Hanna’s upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own (Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett). As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.Though in my view the movie is not a great one it still has the traits of a reasonably good thriller except with a slightly disappointing ending.

LIMITLESS!

Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro star in Limitless, a paranoia-fueled action thriller about an unpublished writer whose life is transformed by a top-secret “smart drug” that allows him to use 100% of his brain and become a perfect version of himself. His enhanced abilities soon attract shadowy forces that threaten his new life in this darkly comic and provocative film. A really interesting movie to watch, one that I thoroughly enjoyed being one of a kind and with a different storyline as the usual James Bond type films. A reasonably good story which keeps the audience on the edge of their seat throughout the movie and has some good suspense which is revealed at the end taking back with the audience a lot to think about

Props and costumes

The props and costumes that we think would be suitable for our particular film production would be!! Costumes!! Shirts Suits Shoes Hoddies Jeans Trainers Props!! Fake guns Mobiles Watches Sunglassses Chapel Back Packs These would suit our movie as the movie s based upon a James Bond thriller, as we see in James Bond movies he is very smartly dressed hence the suits, shirts and ties. The props would be hard to come across so we have had to narrow them down to the minimum as we will not be able to afford Aston Martins e.t.c but this would be able to work well in our production!!

Our cast

Casting We are gong to be using 5 people as the FBI agents, one person as the Ex-FBI agent who is the main character and the FBI boss. The people who are going to be playing the roles are: Nikita Pakhomov-Bruce, Brage Krogsrud-G House, Junaid Rasul - G House, Fraser Simpson-Bruce, Tim Gaesslar-Bruce, Robbie Mitchell-Bruce, Jonothan Daley-Bruce, Harry Wallace -Bruce, Ved Kumar (if needed)-Bruce,  Shantanu Amin-Bruce

Audience research

'What we like to see and expect'
Nowadays there are so many different categories of movies. From period Dramas to action films to romantic comedies there are so man different kind of movies that are available for people to watch and there is always the few genres that people prefer watching for example small kids would prefer watching animations and comedy whereas male teenagers would normally watch action movies with lot of guns, cars and killing. So now i will be choosing a few geners and will be talking about the audiences expectations from those type of films. As there are so many different genres of films i wont be able to talk about all therefore i am choosing films which i have watched and seen. The way i have researched may seem like i am telling you what the genre is but that is also what the audience expect and therefore it is there.

-Action Movies: In action Movies the audience normally expect a hero and a villain. The hero normally sets out to go and accomplish some very hard task which will have lots of obstructions through the course of the movie. Though nowadays since technology is evolving so fast people now expect huge explosions and jaw dropping stunts, which is good because it challenges the movie industry to keep the audience interested. There is always the heroes girl who normally always ends up with the hero at the end and it is a happy ending.

-Adventure Movies: The Main plot elements of an adventure movie includes quests for expedition and lost continents, a jungle and/or desert settings, characters going on a treasure hunts and heroic journeys for the unknown. Adventure films are mostly set in a period background and may include adapted stories of historical or fictional adventure heroes within the historical context. In the last couple of years there have been adventure movies which have the same storyline of the 'treasure hunt' scenario but now they are being set in urban areas and cities making it all the more interesting. For example the sequel 'National Treasure' is based on old stories which are based in some of the cities that we live in right now and it is almost convincing that these stories could possibly be true and puts the audience on the edge of their seats.

-Comedy Movies: They are designed to elicit laughter from the audience. Comedies are mostly light-hearted dramas and are made to amuse and entertain the audiences. The comedy genre humorously exaggerate situations, the way of speaking, the action and characters.Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending. All of us go and watch a comedy movie for the occasional laugh. Now this is a key thing that makers of movies have to keep in mind as the humour of different age groups are different and surely the comedy of a teenager will not be the same as those much older and it is of great importance on how the makers decide on a certain kind of humour that is suitable for a wide range of audience.

-Crime and Detective Movies: Crime films are films which focus on the lives of criminals. The stylistic approach to a crime film varies from realistic portrayals of real-life criminal figures, to the far-fetched evil doings of imaginary arch-villains. Criminal acts are almost always glorified in these movies. In this kind of movie they are normally all bad people as it is going against the law and therefore people look past the fact that they are bad and it is important for the filmmakers to give that impression to the audience, only then will they actually watch the movie for what it is. There is always the "mob wars" that go on showing the movie from one of the criminals perspective, making the audience be in that perspective as well. However a detective movie would be from the detectives point of view and normally he/she is a very keen eyed alert person who thinks very systematically. There are a lot of twists and turns in the movies and every new scene normally has a surprise for the audience making it one very interesting genre to watch.

-Disaster Movies: Along with showing the spectacular disaster, these films concentrate on the chaotic events surrounding the disaster, including efforts for survival, the effects upon individuals and families, and 'what-if' scenarios. These films typically feature large casts of well-known actors and multiple plot lines, focusing on the characters' attempts to avert, escape or cope with the disaster and its aftermath.

-Drama Movies: At the centre of a drama is usually a character or characters who are in conflict at a crucial moment in their lives. They often revolve around families; movies like ordinary people dig under the skin of everyday life to ask big questions and touch on the deepest emotions of normal people. Dramas often, but not always, have tragic or at least painful resolutions and concern the survival of some tragic crisis, like the death of a family member. These movies bring out a lot of meaning and people expect a moral and something that will start them thinking from the minute the movie gets over and this kind of movie can be a genre to bring awareness to people through drama.

-Family Movies: These movies as the name suggests shows that the movie has to be suitable for a family which will usually have a very big age gap, and this kind of movie is a movie that families would like to watch together and just sit and enjoy and therefore since almost everyone like comedy there is normally some of that and there is always a happy ending in a family movie as the people watching it want a happy ending and the least of negativity and even if there is some it never lasts too long.

-Fantasy Movies: Fantasy films are films with fantastic themes, usually involving magic, supernatural events, make-believe creatures, or exotic fantasy worlds.Fantasy films often have an element of magic, myth, wonder, escapism, and the extraordinary. In fantasy films, the hero often undergoes some kind of mystical experience and must ask for assistance from powerful, superhuman forces. Ancient Greek mythological figures or Arabian Nights-type narratives are the typical story-lines. Flying carpets, magic swords and spells, dragons, and ancient religious relics or objects are common elements. Also the thing about fantasy movies is that the makers can go completely wild on their imagination and can put something completely bizarre on screen and yet it would look perfectly normal..the funny thing is that the more bizarre it is the more people like it. That is why people looked forward to seeing the movie Avatar, because it was a change from the normal harry potter-lord of the rings kind of films where there are only dragons and wizards.

-Horror Movies: Plots written within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Themes or elements often prevalent in typical horror films include ghosts, torture, gore and serial killers. Till date i have not understood horror movies as they scare the daylights out of me and as that is the main intent of the makers i guess they are living up to expectations. Audience expects the most scary and disturbing acts which will keep them from sleeping for some time and that is what the cinema aims to do.

-Romantic Movies: In Romantic movies there are always two people who are in love some what like a romeo Juliet scenario and they face a lot of hurdles but at the end even though there are a lot of obstacles they face they end up together and it is a happy ending. One thing that does disappoint the audience and leaves a sad taste in their heads is if one of the two lovers dies or it does not end happily like the titanic but when choosing a bad ending people will expect the rest of the movie to be superb so that it does not bring down the level of the movie.

-Thriller Movies: Thrillers are a genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as the main elements. People expect a lot of action and stunts which will make them interested and entertained at every point in the movie. The one thing that the audience looks for is a good ending and that is something that makers should give a lot of importance to as there is a build up to the end and that is normally the part people look forward to, and a disappointing ending could ruin the whole movie. for example the movie 'next' though an amazing movie disappoints the audience as the ending is extremely unsatisfactory.

-War Movies: War films are a film genre concerned with warfare, usually about naval, air or land based battles, sometimes focusing instead on prisoners of war, covert operations, military training or other related subjects. At times war films focus on daily military or civilian life in wartime without depicting battles. The audience normally expect a lot of action with a good interesting plot with lot of twists and turns and a lot of special effects but not to a very extreme limit. The Hurt Locker is a superb example of a war film which though focuses on a group of three soldiers life has such an interesting plot which is so meaningful.

Risk assessment

Location and location shots

My film is going to be shot only in Gordonstoun school and i and my other group members feel that there are ideal locations in the school which coincide with what we are looking for hence the following shots below are the main areas we will be using however there might be one or two places which might or might not be there as we have put down all the possible locations below.

This is a shot of a water pipe however we are going to use lighting to make it look like a lamppost and this is going to be a shot of the main character standing against the wall.
This is shot of the lessons area and we are using this area as there are many buildings and will have nice little spaces between them for a chase scene.
This is a shot just outside the science department and there is an open space around here to have a combined fight scene with all the FBI agents and the hero.
This area can be used to do a stunt. Maybe jump across or run up the wall.
This again can be used with an object placed there to jump over the wall to make it look full of action since it is basically a place where one gets cornered and escaped through the tough route.
This again is a closed area which will make it a nice place for a chase scene.
This is a closeup of the lockers outside the art department and as it has got a ledge on top to walk on i hope to use it in the best of ways.
The round square arch is going to be used for quick movement like a person running across the arch quickly.
This is a shot of G-House and i would like to shoot it as part of the establishing shot as it is a beautiful building.
This is the gun room and though difficult to see there is a space between the roof of the gun room and the wall and that could be used as a place to jump over as well.
This is a nice shot to have a shadow run across as well.
This is the outside of the chapel which we are using as the FBI headquarters.
These short pillars could be used as stepping stones however since they are a little too wide apart we will put objects in between them to make it easier for the jumping
This is the inside of chapel where it is the corridor of the HQ and the head of the FBI will be walking and talking about the hero
This is the inside of the FBI HQ and we chose this because of the long pews and the vastness of the room.
The three shots underneath are going to be used as establishing shots to see the sun rising/setting since it is a big building with the sun behind it.

Shooting script

At the beginning the main FBI agents says: We have to find this man, no matter what do we have to do for this, find and kill him. After that the main character going to tell his story: Did you ever feel betrayed by close people? Did you ever feel lied to? Yes?Then you are going to understand me. Then we are going to have some action and during this action we are going to hear two people the main FBI agent and the main character they are going to say the same things but two different voices: I know this men ,I've been working with him for a long time ,I know that he is going to do everything to kill me for what I know, for what he knows and one of us has to be dead Key: Main character FBI leader Together Then there is going to be a dialog between the main character and his best friend that sudenly is goin to be killed on his eyes: (Friend) They found you (C) I know it (Friend) You realize that I cant hide you forever, you should also realize that they spied on you and now they are going to kill me (C) It is not going to happen Then his friend gets killed and the main character says at the end: I am going to find you And the FBI agent says the same but they are in different locations.

Sound in our film

Music Used In Our Opening As our opening is going to be mainly a chase scene we will have a lot of diegetic music therefore giving the true sense and feeling for the movie. We are also going to use certain techniques such as recording an extra voice over incase the original one does not work, and we will also use non diegetic sounds such as breaking of materials or loud noises which will sound better as a non diegetic sound rather than diegetic and it may also be more convenient as some sounds maybe difficult to produce on screen. We will aslo be using garage band for certain music tracks therefore as for now we are not going to be using and copyright free music as we would like to keep most of the sound diegetic and fast paced.. We might use certain sounds which are used used a lot in thriller movies to produce a very tense and action type situation. There will be lots of shouting and panting and footsteps as this gives the audience an actual feel of the what the movie is going to be like. We will also use non diegetic sound in some of the scenes maybe when they are talking as it might not be too clear.

Narrative theories

Vladimir propp stated that Whatever the difference between fairytales and stories they all Have the same internal structure. He stated that there are 8 character and 31 different functions. Star wars as an example fit perfectly into propps theory however recent films like pulp fiction do not. The main characters are: The villain The hero The donor The heroes helper The princess Her father The dispatcher The false hero Tzvetan Todorov another person gave another theory was about equilibrium which said that all stories are about the fight to return to normality. Its normally that an event happens and the rest of the story revolves around how to make everything normal again (equilibrium). Our Film connected to Propps theory: As our story being a thriller seems to fit almost perfectly into propps theory. There is a hero in our movie who is an ex FBI agent who is on the run, There is the villain who is the head of the FBI, the donor is his brother who gives him aid and vital information. The false hero is one who takes his place and exposes the actual hero as a bad guy. The princess in this case is the heros girlfriend who is captured and used as 'bait' to expose and get the hero under their control. The girls father in this case is part of the conspiracy and the girl does not want to have anything to do with him.

Story arc

Our movie is based on a a james bond type thriller. The story line revolves around an ex spy in the FBI who finds out about some horrific government plot that is going on and he has been betrayed by all his allies! He has a confronatation with one of his closest freinds who is also part of the conspiracy and warns him about what is in store for him. His whole family including his elder brother who he seeks help from are murdered. With everything that he had completely gone his only oprion is revenge!! He sets out and one by one eliminates all the agents in the FBI and last of all there is a fight scene between him against his friend and his ex boss!

Key elements of the film

As our movie opening is going to be a thriller it has to have certain scenes to prove and show that it is what we say it is. Therefore we have decided to film our opening scene in a low key light setting therefore giving it a sort of scare and there is going to be a short james bond chase scene thereby kicking off the movie with an action filled start. We are going to have some props such as guns and smart suits and sunglasses making it look cool!!Our audience we are aiming at is between the age of 15-30 and they are mainly the mainstream(explained in detail in point 14).The film opening is going to be showing two events going on simultaneously thereby filling in little more information than is required.Even though we dont necessarily have to give the whole story we would like to make it a little different than other openings in the past and try and make it interesting from the start.!!We are going to have between 5-8 people in the chase scene and we will use different actors in the simultaneous office room scene. It is going to be fast paced from the beginning and hopefully we can maintain it throughout the two minutes. Will have shots throughout the school and I am hoping to get a shot of the sunrise or sunset for an establishing shot.

The Film Company

The institution that maybe interested in producing and distributing our films is hammer film productions which is a british filming company in the UK. They mainly make horror films however they also make sci-fi and thriller films. I feel that the reason they will invest in ou film is because our film is a james bond type movie and it is one of a kind as it has a very young cast from gordonstoun!!!!They will be very keen
on having something new for a change and since it is in the shadows of james bond type movie it may be a success. However this is just a thought and a plan and has to yet be presented to them so that they can see it.The other film company that we looked at and that maybe interested in out thriller movie is Coffee films british independent film production company. I fell they might produce our movie as it is a thriller and that is one of the genres they are interested in and since it is similar to a james bond movie they ight consider that as a plus point.

Pearl and Dean

The Pearl and Dean is primarily a british cinema advertising company. They basically sell advertisements to the british cinemas prior to a movie. I am briefly going to talk about the way they categorize their audience. So they have three categories of audience which are further divided into Age, Gender and Class: 15+ : These are for young upmarket teenager. The majority of this market is between the age group of 15-24. There are more ABC1's therefore there is a high market a they are the so called higher class, and there are slightly more female audiences than men. Family:These are mainly housewives and young children. There is an equal number of audience members throughout the age groups of 7-14, 15-34 and 34+. There is a much higher majority of ABC1', compared to C2DE. and there are about 56 % female audiences compared to the 44%of male audience. The Art House is the final category is fr slightly older people and consists of a lot of ABC1. About 63% of 34+ aged people are in this category. They are almost only ABC1 and there are an equal number of male and female members.

Audience research

I think that the type of film we are making attracts the sort of audience that likes action, and people who are very good at something, like a very good and crazy detective or assassin. Our audience likes big turns in the stories, but not too big. Like if the main character has a special thing about him that the audience like they would not want him to change, an example woulld be if the main character can get all the ladies and he is a real player, the audience will not like it if he gets married in my opinion. But other types of turning points that have to do with the missions or campanies they are in is very popular among our audience in my opinion.

Opening sequence Bourne Identity

This picture shows a rusty tap and in the clip there is a diegetic noise when the tap is turned on, it tells the audience that this is being performed in a basement kind of atmosphere and makes the audience suspicious of this being a criminal act.
in this picture you see a mans dirty fingers operating a mans bulletwounds, you see the blood and what was inside the man, this underlines the fact that there is some sort of criminality going on. There is also a very calm and mysterius non-diegetic music, this makes the audience curious.
It is very obvious that this is done in an amateur way since you can see that the man is waering a fleece, and the room is dirty. you can also see a small round window in the background which shows that they are on a fishing boat.
in this picture you see that the man is wearing a wetsuit, this tells you that the fishingboat probably picked him up from the water. As well as a bullethole.
The injured man wakes up, in this shot there is a closeup of the injured mans face as he is strangling the other man, his facial expression shows confusion, pain and anger. He is clearly very surprised of where he woke up and has no clue what is going on.
This is a key shot because the man who was suspected of being a badguy and a criminal because of his little lab in the basement of the boat and because he was operating on the man with a dirty scalpel and dirty hands is helping him and telling him that he found him in the water which is a big turning point.
This shot shows what he under the injured mans skin, it looks like a laser and underlines that the man on the operation table is clearly part of some serious and mysterious stuff.
This shot shows that the operation room is abseloutely not an operation room, but a room in the bottom of a boat with a toolbox to operate on the man, it underlines how amateurly the procedure is done.

Opening sequence analysis The Mechanic

The mechanic opening sequence

The clip starts by showing a Columbian man arriving in Columbia with a private jet. You can see right away that it is a very wealthy man because of the jet and the bodyguards waiting for him at the airport with fancy suits, sunglasses and weapons. They are standing there with fancy cars to underline the wealth of this man.

They step into their fancy cars and drive away as there is some calm southern American music that sounds a little mysterious but at the same time tells you a lot about the man, in this part they make it very obvious that the man is involved in a lot of crime because of the music as well as they drive into a village and step out of their car and attack helpless members of the society because his car was in their way. As their cars approached the village the lighting was very peaceful, the music was also very calm. And you can see that the people were very happy until the richer ones arrived.

As the rich man approaches his villa there is a great of all of the cars in his escort driving through a narrow gate with big walls on the sides and the big villa in the background to show how rich and powerful he is.

He steps out of the car with all the bodyguards around, this proves the high level of security he has it is easy to understand that he feels threatened. The boss also stands out from the bodyguards by wearing a different coloured suit.

He steps into his villa and goes straight to the swimming pool, the swimming pool is very dark, there is no chance of seeing what is in the water, this is to make the audience curious and paranoid. There is obviously something going on because of the mysterious music, guards and the dark swimmingpool.

When he is in the swimming pool he is being filmed from under the dark water, this could mean that he is being filmed from another person’s sight, which is under water.  While he is swimming you can hear diegetic sounds like the sound of him taking a deep breath over water while he is swimming or the sound of his arms mowing under water, this makes the audience feel the reality of the situation. The darkness of the water makes it scary.

During the killing and when the killer is escaping the music played is quite fast which stresses the audience. The killer is under water wearing a black wetsuit which makes him look very professional. Also the killing is very quick and clean and he gets away easily and quickly, a way of showing the killers skills.

The killer took the arms of the dead person and made it look like he was swimming so the guards would not notice he was dead. A way to show how professional the killer is.
